About Moonee Ponds

Traditionally named Moonee Moonee Ponds, the name is said to come from Wurundjeri willam man, a member of the Billibellary people who died serving the native police corps in Wimmera in 1845. It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word for lizard.

Moonee Ponds begin as a semi-rural district, Moonee Ponds began developing into a populous suburb during the late 1800s, with a large collection of historic buildings remaining today as a legacy of its past.

Moonee Ponds is a suburb of Melbourne, 7 km north suburbs of Melbourne’s central business district. Its local government areais the City of Moonee Valley. At the 2011 Census, Moonee Ponds had a population of 13,532. Today it’s a well-established inner north-western suburb of Melbourne, surrounded by the neighbouring suburbs of Brunswick, Essendon and Ascot Vale.
