The suburb name Research came about during the gold rush era in Victoria. Before it was named Research its original name was Swiper’s Gully, however more gold was found after the suburb was re-searched. After this they decided to name it Research Gully, and then in the late 19th century it was abbreviated to Research.
Research is located in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, approximately 24 kilometres from the CBD. The local governing area for the suburb is the Shire of Nillumbik. The 2016 census indicated that research had a total population of 2,649.
The very first Post Office was opened in Research on the 20th of October 1902.
