About Sunbury

Sunbury was first discovered/settled by William Jackson and George Evans in 1836. It was actually George and his brother Samuel who decided to name the town as Sunbury, named after ‘Sunbury on Thames’ in Middlesex in England. The name was made official in 1857.

Sunbury is a suburb/town of Melbourne, that is located 42 kilometres north west of Melbournes CBD. The local governing area for Sunbury is the City of Hume. The 2021 census indicated that the town had a population of 36,084. Even though Sunbury far from the city, statistics suggest that the town is still considered part of Greater Melbourne.

The area of Sunbury still has significant importance to the Aboriginal archaeological sites, where the five earth rings were identified in the 70s and 80s, which experts say they were used for ceremonial gatherings.
