The name originates from a parliamentarian and a local land owner, (1850s) William Highett.

Highett is a suburb of Melbourne, 16km south-east of Melbourne’s CBD and a couple kilometres east of Port Phillip. Its local government area are the cities of Bayside and Kingston. 2011 Census indicated that Highett had a population of 10,263. The suburbs boarding Highett are: Hampton East/ Moorabbin in the north, Cheltenham in the east and south, and Hampton/ Sandringham in the west.
